The painting is in excellent original condition, and is signed in the lower left corner of the painting. The painting is estimated to have been created in approximately 1938-1945. Please review all of the detailed images as supplemental to the condition report, for quality assurance. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  Peter Alexander Ilyen was a celebrated artist known for his portraits, landscapes, and murals, primarily based in San Francisco.  He painted sweeping landscapes and completed several mural commissions for the Bohemian Club and for the Golden Gate International  Exposition, in 1939.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  Born in Kazan. Russia in 1887, Peter Alexander Ilyen showed early artistic talent, sketching nature and taking private lessons as a youth. Despite his artistic promise, tradition required the eldest son of an aristocratic family to attend the military academy. He graduated from the Imperial Government Military Academy in 1909, but continued his arr studies privately.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  By age 18, Peter Ilyen was an accomplished artist in Kazan, and received several mural commissions. He served in the cavalry on the Austrian Front, during World War I, and between 1914 and 1916. In 1918, during the Russian Revolution, Peter Ilyen, his wife Nadine, and his brother Gleb, (also an artist), fled Russia, for Japan. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  After earning money by painting portraits in Japan, Peter and Nadine emigrated to the United States in 1922, settling in San Francisco, California.
