A rare and extraordinary composition by the abstract artist, Harold Cohen; (born 1928). Cohen was born in London and by 1966 was one of a handful of artists representing England at the Venice Biennale. He has lived in California since 1968, becoming a visiting professor at the University of California San Diego. In 1971 he was invited to Stanford University, where he became interested in the application of artificial intelligence to fine art creation. A computer program called "AARON" drove controlled drawing machines, and then, painting machines. A so-called "turtle" moved over the art surface. Shortly his work was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and at the La Jolla Museum of Art. Cohen came to the United States as a visiting lecturer at the University of California, San Diego in 1968, but he was given the rank of professor and stayed on for nearly three decades, part of the time as chairman of the Visual Arts Department. Harold Cohen still resides in Encinitas, California. His work has been exhibited at the Tate, in London; and a large collection of his work is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The painting is oil on board, and measures approximately 23.3"X36"; (painting, alone). In frame, the painting measures larger. The painting is in excellent original condition. It is estimated to have been painted right on the cusp of 1970. There is no paint loss, and there have been no overpaints. Painting is still housed in the original vintage frame, with a fabric mat. The frame has had some restoration, and is a charcoal black fabric with brass painted trim. Frame is in good and presentable condition; still retains vintage look and appeal, with only slight imperfections from wear and age. There is a title written on reverse; but has not been deciphered, as of yet. Harold Cohen's larger, more abstract, and complicated compositions such as this one, are rare. The painting does not disappoint. Harold Cohen has always been revered as a gifted colorist. Interlocking expressionist colors are brilliant, and with the strong composition the artist is known for; it is stunning.
