Paul Soldner was born in 1921, in Summerfield, Illinois. Paul Soldner was considered to be the "Miles Davis of Ceramics", and as a major force in the evolution of contemporary ceramic art. It is perhaps an irony of fate that Paul Soldner, known for developing “American raku”, and low-temperature salt firing, never planned to be a potter. He was a pre-med student when he was drafted into World War II. After the war, Soldner turned to painting, and received a BFA from Bluffton College in Ohio; and an MA in art education, from the University of Colorado.

At 33, Paul Soldner went to the Los Angeles County Art Institute, (now Otis College of Art and Design), to become Peter Voulkos’ first graduate student. Known for experimentation, Soldner helped his teacher establish the program. He made several changes to the studio pottery equipment, which led to him founding Soldner Pottery Equipment Corp. in 1955, to market his inventions. (He held seven patents related to pottery equipment.) For nearly 40 years, Soldner taught at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate School in California. He divided his time between California and Colorado, the home of Anderson Ranch Arts Center, which he helped establish. His contributions to the ceramics world were numerous: Besides building the Scripps Ceramics Annual invitational exhibition, he had almost 200 solo shows and gave hundreds of lectures and demonstrations. He received the American Craft Council’s Gold Medal in 2008. Paul Soldner passed away in Claremont, California, in 2011.

Paul Soldner's work is included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum UK, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. His works are in galleries in Pomona, California, Australia, Japan, Oakland, Claremont, Washington D.C., and Taiwan.

A very rare original Paul Solder mixed media painting on heavy Arches Paper, with tiny bits of ground Mica that reflect/illuminate in the light. Extremely beautiful abstract expressionist movement; sheer, ethereal color. Painting is laid onto a canvas-type board with fabric. The entire board and painting are behind the vintage lucite shadowbox frame, with screws in the side. The frame is not in good condition and will need to be replaced. It has only been used in the interim to protect the painting. The painting alone measures approximately 28"X37". In frame, the painting measures approximately 32"X42". (Painting is large for shipping. Pick-up in the Los Angeles area is also available/recommended) Signed "Soldner", verso upper left, dated '81. Original Paul Soldner mixed media painting is in very good to excellent, original condition.
