Robert J. Demarest was a distinguished fine art American watercolorist and medical illustrator, recognized for his profound contributions to anatomical and neurological illustration. He served as the Director of the Department of Medical Illustration at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Demarest is best known for his meticulous and lucid depictions of the human body, which have educated generations of medical professionals. He provided original illustrations for many editions of the seminal textbook by Charles Notack and others, which are highly praised for their clarity in complex neurological structures.

Demarest also co- authored The Anatomy of Figure Drawing: Secrets of a Master Medical Artist", sharing his expertise on combining medical accuracy, with artistic form.

In his personal artwork, Demarest frequently combined traditional watercolor, and sometimes mixed media, with line work. Demarest often painted on location during hisvtravels and at home. His fine art often included landscapes and waterfalls, travel scenes, and figurative scenes. He was known for intimate scenes of life in the Northeast U.S., capturing subjects in parks, restaurants, and at the seaside.

His expertise in figure drawing, as detailed in his book, "The Anatomy of Figure Drawing", allowed him to translate his deep understanding of the human form into expressive, figurative art.

Robert J. Demarest's connection to the broader art world is also highlighted by his work as an author and lecturer on American artist and angler, Winslow Homer. Demarest lectured extensively on Winslow Homer at museums and organizations, across the U.S.

While the majority of his prominent work in museums relates to medical illustrations, (such as the Harvard- Countway Library of Medical Archives collection), his fine art watercolors and paintings have been exhibited and won several awards. He had numerous one- person exhibitions, including the exhibition, "Robert J. Demarest: Painting in Many Moods of Rivers and Streams", at the Belskie Museum in Closter, New Jersey, in 2007. In 2010, Demarest also won the 2010 New Jersey Watercolor Award, among several others.
