Sir William Oliphant Hutchison, (1889-1970), was a prominent Scottish portrait and landscape painter and a central figure in the 20th century Scottish art establishment. He is perhaps most recognized for his refined society portraits, and for his tenure as the Director of the Glasgow School of Art, between 1933 and 1943.

Sir William Hutchison was born on July 2, 1889, in Kirkcaldy, Fife, the son of a successful businessman. Hutchison attended Rugby School before studying at the Edinburgh College of Art, between 1909 and 1912, and later in Paris,, at L'Atelier Delecluse.

Sir William Hutchison was a member of the Edinburgh Group, a collective of young painters, who exhibited together, before and after the First World War. During the War, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and was severely injured, in France. Hutchison became a highly sought- after society portraitist. Notable sitters included Queen Elizabeth II, in 1956), Prince Philip, (the Duke of Edinburgh), and Dorothy Sayers.

Hutchison's landscape work often featured France and the Mediterranean Coast, and was noted for its freer brushwork, and use of light, reflecting influences from French Impressionism and the Scottish Colourists.

While primarily known for his society portraits, Sir William Oliphant Hutchison also produced a significant body of still life works. These paintings often feature floral arrangements, domestic objects, and occasionally, exotic items, reflecting a sophisticated, curated domesticity. Like his landscapes, these works often use loose, but precise, brushwork, to capture the interplay between light and color. His harmonious, precise palette blended earthly tones with bursts of vibrant color, a technique influenced by Scottish Colourists. Many of his pieces utilize a traditional "tabletop" arrangement, focusing on the interplay between natural elements, (such as flowers or plants), and man- made objects, ( such as ceramics and candles).

Sir William Hutchison was a distinguished administrator, and held several key positions in the Scottish art world, including as the Director of the Glasgow School of Art, from 1933 to 1943, elected as a full Academician in 1943. Hutchison also served as the President of the Royal Scottish Academy, (RSA), from 1950 to 1959, and served as the President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

Sir William Hutchison was knighted in 1953 for his services to art. He recieved an Honorary Doctor of Laws, from Edinburgh University, in 1956.

Sir William Oliphant Hutchison's works are held in over 60 public collections, primarily across Scotland and the UK. National collections include the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Galleries of Scotland, in Edinburgh, and the National Maritime Museum, in Greenwich. Scottish regional and academic cillections include the Glasgow Museums, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Dundee Art Galleries and Museums, and Kirkcaldy Galleries.
