The Leerdam Glass Factory is the famous glass factory, in Leerdam, where many leading designers have worked or have provided designs.
Antoon Christiaan Jeekel, and JJ Mijnssen, were two former partners of the firm Jeekel, Mijnssen & Co. From 1875, to 1877, they ran a hard glass factory. This glassmaking came under the guidance of A. de la Bastie, which was similar in aspects.
In September of 1877, a limited partnership was formed between Jeekel, Mijnssen and OHL Nieuwenhuijzen acted as managing partners. This company's goal was to operate a plant with half crystal, and crystal. In the beginning, things were difficult and they were forced to get equipment and tools from overseas. In 1885, Jeekel died and was succeeded by C. Nortier Azn, which until then was a limited partner. Nieuwenhuijzen joined to form one more of the (then), limited workforce.
The company tied trade relations with foreign countries and continents. There were many merchants to Leerdam, and business was flourishing. Initially, they worked for the English market, South America and Mexico, as well as some overseas customers in Hamburg, and Paris.
Gradually, the factory expanded, and the company was converted into a public limited company, with the three managing partners and directors. Thus began, in June of 1891, the SA Leerdam Glass Factory, and Jeekel, Mijnssen and Co.; with a combined capital of 220,000 francs.
In 1912, PM Cochius became the director. He brought in several new artists. Glass designs from KPC de Bazel, (of various glass tablewares), were the first designs produced.
Andries Copier started working at the glass factory, in 1914. In 1922, Copier started with the first designs of glass in the factory, and was for many years, the only designer in permanent employment of the glassworks. In 1927, Copier became the artistic director; and in 1930, the Guild Glass expanded on his works.
Some designers included:
Cornelis de Lorm, Sybren Valkema, Chris Lanooy, HP Berlage, Chris Lebeau, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Leerdam Glass Factory was taken over in 1938, by the Vereenigde Glasfabrieken, to Schiedam.
In 1958, commissioned by the Vereenigde Glasfabrieken, filmmaker Bert Haanstra made a company film about the production of glass. In 1958, Haanstra then made the Leerdam glassworks film entitled simply, "Glass". This artistic film about glassmaking won an Oscar in 1950.
In January 2008, the Royal Delft Group was created by the merger of crystal manufacturer Royal Leerdam Crystal, (Glass Factory Leerdam); with BV Koninklijke Van VKB, and Royal Delft.
