Toshiko Takeazu, (June 17, 1922 – March 9, 2011), an American painter, and sculptor; was born to Japanese immigrants in Pepeeko, Hawaii, in 1922. She studied at the Honolulu Museum of Art, and at the University of Hawaii, under Claude Horan, from 1948-51. From 1951-54, she continued her studies at Cranbook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills Michigan, where she befriended Finnish ceramist, Maija Grotell, whom became her mentor. In 1955, Takaezu traveled to Japan, where she studied Buddhism, and the techniques of the traditional Japanese pottery, which influenced her work, through- out her career. She taught for ten years at the Cleveland Institute of Art; and from 1967-92, she taught at Princeton University, where she was awarded an honorary doctorate. She is known for her gorgeous colors, and free form sculptured ceramics. (Colors of lavender, dark navy blue, dark coffee brown, light tan, and light traces of black. There also appears to be some luster in some of the paint, as it shines in the light, and reflects the colors  in an amazing way, with the light crackle of the glaze, and various flowing thick dripping glaze.) There are no condition issues; the vase is in mint original condition. The vase is stamped with the artist's stamp along the lower bottom edge. Toshiko Takaezu made functional wheel thrown vases early in her career. She later switched to abstract sculptures with freely applied, poured glazes, such as this glaze. (The variations in the surface of the vase, show it to have been hand sculpted, to a degree, as well). Glaze is quite beautiful; thick, freely poured expressionist drippings of variations between light tan, brown, blue, and a striking lavender purple contrasts. A lovely, and technically marvelous work by the artist.
