Original antique genre and landscape oil painting on canvas by Belgian naturalist painter Victor Wagemaekers, (1876-1953). The painting is of a man wearing victorian clothing and a long red scarf in a windy, moody landscape in a cemetery. The lighting is captured beautifully conveying the mood. The painting is in very good condition and remains housed in the original art nouveau frame; made of heavy wood covered in worked metal. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner and the artist's large mark bearing his name is verso, on the canvas. The measurements of the painting are approximately 20" x 24", sans frame. With the frame, the entire work measures approximately 24.75" x 28.75".

Victor Wagemaekers was known for his depictions of genre scenes, landscapes, and still life oil paintings. He was born on September 5th, 1876 in Gannshoren, Belgium. Wagemaeker's work is charcterized by a naturalistic style, often compared with the work of Franz Courtens.

Victor Wagemeakers studied under Franz Courtens beginning in 1900. Courtens influenced Wagemaeker's use of light in his landscapes and quicker brushstrokes, suggestive of impressionism. Wagemaekers is also particularly noted for his warecolors paintings.

Wagemaekers was a member of the "Le Sillon" art group, exhibiting with them from 1899.

Wagemaeker was the treasurer of the Societe Nationale des Aquarellistes et Pastellistes.

A retrospecive of his work was held in Koekelburg, Belgium in 1965.

Victor Wagemaekers' art is held in public and private collections including museums in Antwerp and Turnout, Belgium.
