All of the paint is stable and is original to the painting. There are a couple of areas of abrasion near the corners, (and tiny bits of dust that are above the varnish that could be cleaned. Additionally, the painting could use a varnish remover, from yellowing in isolated areas, due to the age of the varnish.
Walter Leistikow (1865, Bromberg - 1908, Berlin) was a renowned landscape painter hailing from Berlin. His artistic focus primarily revolved around the serene lakes and enchanting woodlands of Brandenburg. In addition to his paintings, Leistikow dabbled in other artistic ventures, such as etchings and craft designs for carpets and wallpapers. He even ventured into the realm of literature.
Although he faced rejection after a mere six months at the Academy in Berlin, Leistikow persevered by seeking private lessons and eventually teaching at the city's art school during the early 1890s. In 1892, he played a pivotal role as a co-founder of the "Vereinigung der XI," an artists' group that stood in opposition to the established norms of the time.
The rejection of his masterpiece, "Grundewaldsee" (Lake Grunewald), at the Grand Berlin Exhibition in 1888 marked a significant turning point for Leistikow. It served as one of the catalysts for the formation of the Berlin Secession a year later in 1898, a movement in which Leistikow played a prominent part. In 1903, he further contributed to the art scene by becoming one of the initiators of the Deutsche Künstlerbund (German Association of Artists).
Leistikow's artistic style found its place amidst the realm of Jugendstil and Impressionism. His evocative landscapes exhibited a fusion of ornamental stylization and decorative aesthetics, influenced by Symbolism and Japanese woodcuts. As his career progressed, he ventured into brighter color palettes and applied his paint with a lighter touch.
