Original antique Salmagundi Club Thumb Box Exhibition oil painting, by William Frederic Ritschel, (1864-1949). Painting is a landscape of a small dwelling/shack in between trees, and has the extraordinary palette also associated with select members of the Salmagundi Club at this time, including John Follinsbee, and Robert Frederick Blum. The painting is hand signed by the artist in red, lower left, and dated Sept 1915. Ritschel joined The Salmagundi Club in 1901, and won the Isador Prize in 1923.

William Frederic Ritschel (1864–1949) was a California impressionist painter who was born in Nuremberg, Germany, in1864. As a youth, Ritschel worked as a sailor and began sketching seascapes. He studied art under Karl Raupp (1837–1918) and Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805–1874) at the Royal Academy of Munich before immigrating to New York City in 1895. In 1911, he settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California and began painting the Monterey Peninsula, as well as exhibiting on the east coast, and in Europe.

Signature is almost illegible. "W and R are the most legible letters of the signature. Due to lack of complete signature, painting is listed in the manner of William Rischel.

Original antique gold gild wood and original leaded glass frame is in excellent condition.

Lower portion of the painting, from left corner in red, retains writing. Dated September 1915.
Painting is in very good to excellent original condition, with no restorations or cleanings. Very minimal wearing of painting to be expected, due to age.
